What is Mica glass?
Mica stove glass is thin transparent almost paper like glass. Made from thin slices of mica stone, generally 0.003 to 0.005 inches thick. Mica glass can withstand temperatures as high as 1800° F (982° C). Yet it can easily be cut to size with scissors, a paper cutter, or an exacto knife. First appearance in wood stoves in the 1700s, mica glass sheets were used in lanterns, stoves, furnaces, and boiler peepholes. With a clear to bronze tint, mica glass sheets look very similar in appearance to very thin plexi-glass. Mica glass is made by removing paper-thin layers of mica away from quartz-like stone.
